Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow is back in excellent form for his fourth adventure in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which is more serious in the hands of a new director, Rob Marshall, and thanks to Penelope Cruz it’s also a good deal sexier.

Best known for musicals such as Nine and the Academy Award-winning Chicago, Marshall shows terrific flair with all the usual chases and sword fights, and he handles the 3D well. He also adds a dash of pepper with lively sexual tension between Sparrow and a Spanish firecracker named Angelica (Cruz).

Angelica is Jack’s match for swordplay and sexy banter, and while the tone of the film, which deals with a search for the fountain of youth, is darker than the three directed by Gore Verbinski, its action, adventure and comedy will see it find a similar pot of theatrical gold.

More of the story takes place on dry land than the other films with inventive and exciting set pieces in London and the hills and jungles of an exotic place where lies the secret of perpetual youth.

It begins with Jack in the British capital to find a way to release from prison his stalwart sailmate Gibbs (Kevin McNally). With inspiration from a novel by Tim Powers titled On Stranger Tides, about another captain named Jack, screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio show typical ingenuity in devising hair-raising obstacles for Jack to overcome. In the opening, this involves changing the course of justice in an English court, an encounter with the king in his palace and a riotous chase through the streets of London.

The series’ regular cinematographer, Dariusz Wolski, captures the cityscapes wittily and makes the most of real locations from the city center to the venerable naval museum at Greenwich. Marshall has brought in his usual production designer, John Myhre, who won an Oscar for Chicago, and he makes the palaces, pubs and, later, jungle temple breathtakingly shipshape. Hans Zimmer demonstrates again his keen grasp of how a musical score can inform action and elevate mood and tension.

The plot is again driven by a search for something virtually unobtainable as Jack finds himself in a chase to find the fountain of youth in competition with not only the returning Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush, having fun once more) but also the Spanish navy and the most deadly pirate of them all, Blackbeard (Ian McShane).

Cruz makes a splendid entrance in disguise but once revealed she brings her Oscar-winning vivacity to an irrepressible woman who claims to be Blackbeard’s daughter. McShane, too, grabs his first appearance on the bridge of a pirate ship with great panache.

No less would be expected of Rolling Stone Keith Richards, who has a killer line as Jack’s indomitable pirate father when his son asks him whether he’s ever seen the fountain of youth. It feeds cleverly on the Richards legend and will become one of the most-quoted lines from the series.

The film makes an adventurous departure from the traditionally benign view about mermaids. A mermaid’s tear is a vital ingredient of the potion required for the secret of youth and so Blackbeard schemes to ensnare a school of them in nets on an island beach. They turn out to have more in common with one of Davy Jones’ underwater beasts, save one played by sweet-looking Astrid Berges-Frisbey, who falls for an idealistic cleric played by Sam Claflin. The missionary gives Jack fodder for an amusing line, but also puts religious faith in a good light compared to the Spanish Catholics, whose inquisitional devotion makes them the bad guys.

Marshall and his team make good use of 3D in the exterior sequences so that London landmarks and rocky islands look magnificent. It is less successful when CGI is involved, however, as characters sometimes appear to be cut out figures.

At 136 minutes, the film is marginally the shortest in the series and it profits from that. Cruz is a wonderful addition and a teaser following the credits augers well for more so long as Depp continues to get as much enjoyment from playing the role as he gives to his audience.

When is the past really the present? When is death not really death? What if you could change the past? From the director of the much overlooked sci-fi film Moon comes Source Code, a new thriller that seeks to answer these questions. Source Code is also one of the most original movies of 2011.

In Source Code, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Captain Colter Stevens, who wakes up on a train to discover he's inhabiting another man's body. Eight minutes later, the train explodes. When he awakes again, he learns he's part of a secret government program that can send him into the last eight minutes of a person's life. It's his mission to learn who the bomber is to prevent a much more devastating attack in the near future.

Source Code works with a similar premise to the Tony Scott action-thriller Déjà vu, but that's where the similarities end. The identity of the terrorist is only half the battle; the truth about how Stevens became involved with the program is just as if not more important. As he continues to go back to the train, he also begins to develop a relationship with the woman sitting across from him (Michelle Monaghan).

In other words, Source Code is a uniquely complex thriller. Can't say that too often.

The movie is well written and elaborate. It keeps you guessing and is legitimately unpredictable. It also presents a variety of turns and developments not shown in the previews.

Gyllenhaal is excellent in the lead. Though Monaghan is important and does a fine job, Gyllenhaal carries the picture, bringing with him an energized and emotional performance. He continues to prove he's a versatile lead actor.

Vera Farmiga also turns in a great performance. She takes what could have been a two-dimensional role and takes it to a whole other level.

Source Code isn't without a few small flaws. The bickering between Stevens and his handlers in the first half of the movie gets a bit tedious at times; while it keeps things mysterious, the exchanges don't always feel natural. Furthermore, the discovery and capture of the bomber is abrupt and rushed.

The movie isn't perfect, but Source Code is one of the most refreshing action-thrillers in years. It also stands well as a legitimate sci-fi piece. Highly recommended.

Game of Thrones

Not since "Rome" and "The Tudors" wrapped have I felt so strongly about a dramatic series set in a time long gone. Unlike the two series mentioned, the new drama on HBO, "Game of Thrones," is not a real world or historical period drama, but an adapted drama based on the construct of an imagination that was born to tell a grand, great yarn.

I came to this as a George R.R. Martin virgin, never reading his written word.

This series will just grab you and not let go. Creator and author George R.R. Martin is a son of Bayonne, New Jersey, a working class kid who penned a genre of fiction that never hooked me as a young reader. His prose - and the fantastical fantasy fiction world in general - was never on my reading list. As someone who lives for "Justified," "Sons of Anarchy" and "Dexter," my kind of televised fare is bathed in gritty realism, noir humor, dense story with superb casts.

Yet after watching six episodes of this HBO masterpiece, I shall now go and find everything he has ever written to savor.

"Epic" and "enthralling" are overused words in reviews, yet feel dead-on accurate to describe the emotions and feel of this lush yet stark (how can a cinematographer achieve this feat?) cool filtered layered study in power and honor, human kindness and cruelty, and all the foibles and flaws of humanity wrapped up in the "Houses" of the mythical Westeros realm.

There are good, bad and ugly characters in Martin's bestselling fantasy book series "A Song of Ice and Fire," that "Thrones" is based upon, and the producers carefully filled these larger than life roles for the HBO effort. In a phone interview this last week, I asked George R.R. Martin about this feat in casting, and about some of the standout players: Kit Harrington as Jon Snow, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister and Sean Bean as Lord "Ned" Stark.
"The casting of those two characters in particular were very different. When I had that initial meeting five years ago with (David) and (Dan), we kicked around some casting ideas. You know, some of the usual dream casting and some of the people that we’d had in mind. And there were two characters that we were all in perfect accord there, even five years ago and that was Sean Bean as Ned Stark and Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister."

"These were our first choices. Really, our only choices far and away for those roles. So we never even auditioned for the part of Tyrion Lannister. When we got the (green series) they just went out and got Peter Dinklage. And he was the only one we ever wanted. We knew he would be great for the role and, thankfully, we landed him. And he’s magnificent. He’s a fabulous addition to the show and he’s a joy to work with."

Martin continued. "The part of John Snow was much different. We kicked around a few names for it, but we really didn’t have anyone strongly in mind. And it’s younger role so you need an actor who’s relatively new. And we looked at a lot of young British actors for that part. Some of the actors who are playing other roles in the show - you know, smaller roles - initially came to our attention because they read for the part of John Snow."

"So we looked at many people and Kit Harrington really, really stood out. He was one of the strong contenders right from the first. He had a great look for the character. His performance was wonderful. And, of course, most of his prior work - his biggest thing was the British stage play, a thing called War Horse which I believe has just come to Broadway as well. And he was very acclaimed in that and we knew about that. And he was another fabulous find for us."

"So there were many people involved in the casting process. But I was certainly one of them right from the beginning on pretty much every role. I had a voice," concluded Martin.

Unlike other fantastical tales where ladies in lakes rise arms up bearing swords and Hobbits abound with hairy feet, chased by one-eyed monsters, this fantasy is very human and real, and the character development and execution is so amazingly well done, many showrunners and writers need to watch and take notes.

Everything in Thrones excels: Costuming, makeup, production design, storytelling, astoundingly good acting and great visual effects. No missteps or wasted frames.

Writers and executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did exceptional work in collaboration with Martin. Director Tim Van Patten gives us a visual feast of extremely beautiful exteriors (Ireland and Malta).The story of "Thrones" at the outset seems daunting but is easily shaped and presented so you have a clear understanding of how they interrelate, and their histories.
House Stark dominates the North, where the great wall is their charge, to protect the rest of the kingdom. "Winter is coming" is their salvo, and means much more than just bone breaking cold. Stark has married into House Tully through Ned's (Sean Bean) wife Lady Catelyn (Michelle Fairley), Catelyn's insane sister Lady Lysa (Kate Dickie) now heads House Tully of the Riverlands.

The platinum blond family of House Targaryen is a kingdom without a home, the last of the ancients who were the dragon masters. Princess Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is given up by her pervy sadistic brother (Harry Lloyd) in a strategic marriage to warlord Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) as the battle to rule the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and reclaim the Iron Throne is afoot.

House Baratheon and House Stark are joined together, with Ned (Bean) serving King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy). House Lannister is married to House Baratheon by Queen Cersei Baratheon's (Lena Headey) marriage to King Robert. Cersei is the evil, duplicitous wife of Robert, and she absolutely hates the Starks. The standout Lannister is of course Tyrion Lannister, played so beautifully by Peter Dinklage, it will be always considered one of the best roles of his lifetime. Tyrion's lack of height is dwarfed by his enormous sex appeal, and capacity to think on his feet and strategize, but not in such a wholly evil and conniving way his incestuous brother and sister do.

Tyrion's got a soft spot for things broken and less loved. Dinklage owns every shot he is captured in. Bravo.

With expert writing, pace and precision you are introduced to these unforgettable characters. It will not confuse, but pull you headfirst into a wonderful drama that makes you wish HBO aired this series in three hour blocks.

THOR Movie

    Next May, Thor will touch down in Midgard only to battle all forces of otherworldy evil and encounter the allure of true in the unlikely form of a mortal woman. Possibly the most ambitious of comic book movies, the unusual combination of fantasy and superheroics will make the Thor film stand out against what moviegoers have seen up until now. Directed correctly by thespian Kenneth Branagh, this could be a real knock-out or it could be a glorified He-Man movie. I’m hoping for the former to be true.

    Marvel Studios has finally released an official plot synopsis for director Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, the live-action adaptation of the classic Marvel Comic book. Though previous reports seemed to indicate that the majority of the movie would take place on the extra-dimensional realm of Asgard, which Thor and the other Norse gods call home, from the synopsis it appears that most of the action will actually be taking place on earth.

    Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment present the epic adventure, Thor, which spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful, young scientist, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), has a profound effect on Thor, as she ultimately becomes his first love. It’s while here on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.The look of Thor has worried many fans, but apparently the film
    will take inspiration from the current monthly series. Surprisingly, the costume looks amazing. We could tell early on from the production sketches of costumes and sets that this was going to be something good. It’s just beautiful and the designers really took it to heart. If you look at some of the more recent Thor comics that are out now, the tone and the costuming is that. It’s basically, the way you read the comics now, they’re updated the way they are now and that’s how the costumes are. I think everyone is going to be very, very happy. Nothing looks cheesy or cheap. Everything looks like it’s real. Everything looks like it came from that period. And everything looks right on all the actors. Nothing looks stupid. I guess that’s the best word. It’s just jaw-dropping even to the Marvel executives.
The Thor film has also been confirmed as taking place before the formation of the Avengers, but after the battle between the Hulk and the Abomination in New York City.In terms of time-line, Thor is set after The Incredible Hulk. In the script we make mention of gamma radiation and one of the scientist characters, I think Stellan Skarsgard’s Professor Ford recalls, “There was brilliant scientist (Bruce Banner). He was a genius with gamma radiation and somehow S.H.I.E.L.D. made him disappear.” So Thor’s story would take place after The Incredible Hulk.

Of course no Thor movie could be complete without the evil Loki…
    This movie is as much an origin story for Loki as it is for Thor and he’s not only the hero’s nemesis but his brother. How do you deal with a situation like that where the very person who is trying to destroy you is your adopted brother? In the script, Thor is basically banished to Earth because he’s arrogant and proud and must learn what it is to live among mortals. And while the cat’s away, the mouse will play. While he’s gone, Loki starts discovering things about himself, including his desire to be all powerful. He wants to be as well loved as Thor and that jealousy starts creating these complications. “Why can’t I be the ruler? Fast Five is a 2011 action film written by Chris Morgan and directed by Justin Lin. The film stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster and Dwayne Johnson and was first released in Australia on April 20, 2011 followed by a domestic release on April 29, 2011 as the fifth film in the The Fast and the Furious franchise. Fast Five follows Brian O'Conner (Walker), Dom Toretto (Diesel) and Mia Toretto (Brewster) as they plan a heist to steal $100 million from corrupt businessman Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) while being pursued for arrest by DSS agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson). Though it is the fifth entry in the series, the events of the film take place between those of Fast & Furious (2009) and The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006).

For development of Fast Five, a conscious effort was made by Universal Studios to shift away from the street racing theme prevalent in previous films in the series. Emphasis was instead placed on transforming the franchise into an action series in an attempt to attract wider audiences that may otherwise be turned off by the series' focus on cars and car culture. While authorities search for them, the trio escape to Rio de Janeiro. Awaiting Dom's arrival, Mia and Brian join their friend Vince (Matt Schulze) and other participants on a job to steal three cars from a train. The job goes awry when Brian and Mia discover the train is carrying DEA agents and that the cars are seized property. When Dom arrives with the rest of the participants, he realizes that one of them, Zizi (Michael Irby), is only interested in stealing one car; the Ford GT40. Dom has Mia steal the car herself while Dom and Brian fight Zizi and his henchmen, with Zizi killing the DEA agents assigned to the vehicles. Dom and Brian are captured and brought to crime lord - and owner of the cars - Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida), Zizi's boss where he orders the pair be interrogated to discover the location of the car. However they manage to escape and retreat to their safehouse.

While Brian, Dom and Mia examine the car to discover its importance, Vince arrives and is revealed to be working for Reyes when he removes a computer chip from the car. Dom forces Vince to leave and after investigating the chip, Brian discovers it contains details of Reyes' criminal empire including the locations of $100 million in cash. Following the murder of the DEA agents aboard the train, blamed on Dom and his team, U.S. DSS agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and his team arrive in Rio to capture Dom and Brian. They travel to Dom's safehouse with assistance from local officer Elena Neves (Elsa Pataky), but find it under assault by Reyes' men. Brian, Dom and Mia escape with Dom suggesting they split up and leave Rio, but after Mia announces she is pregnant with Brian's child, Dom instead suggests they steal Reyes' money to start a new life. The trio organize a team to perform the heist, recruiting Han Seoul-Oh (Sung Kang), Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson), Tej Parker (Ludacris), Gisele Yashar (Gal Gadot), Tego Leo (Tego Calderón) and Rico Santos (Don Omar). Vince later joins the team after saving Mia from being captured by Reyes' men, earning Dom's trust once more.

Hobbs and his team eventually find and arrest Dom, Mia, Brian and Vince. While transporting them to an airport for extradition to the United States, the convoy is attacked by Reyes' men, killing Hobbs' team and Vince. Hobbs is saved by Dom, Brian and Mia as they fight back against Reyes' men and escape. Wanting revenge for his murdered team, Hobbs and Elena agree to help with the heist. The gang breaks into the police station where Reyes' money is kept and tear the vault from the building using their cars, dragging it through the city with police in pursuit. Believing they cannot outrun the police, Dom makes Brian continue on without him while he attacks the police and the pursuing Reyes; using the vault attached to his car to smash their vehicles. Brian returns to kill Zizi, while Reyes is badly injured by Dom's assault. Hobbs arrives on the scene and executes Reyes. Hobbs refuses to let the pair go free, but unwilling to arrest him, agrees to give them a 24-hour head start to escape. The gang split Reyes' money, with Dom leaving Vince's share to his family, and they go their separate ways.

In the South Pacific, Brian and now visibly pregnant Mia relax on a beach, where they are met by Dom and Elena. Brian challenges Dom to a final, no-stakes race to prove who is the better driver.

In a post-credits scene, Hobbs is given a special file by U.S. Customs agent Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes) concerning the hijack of a military convoy in Berlin. In the file, Hobbs discovers a recent photo of Leticia Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez), Dom's presumed-deceased girlfriend, revealing she survived the events of Fast & Furious.

Amanda Knox appealed: Perugia court gives forensics experts another 40 days to complete tests

Court appointed forensic experts re-examining evidence in Amanda Knox's murder appeal have been granted a 40-day extension to their independent investigation.

The team was due to deposit its findings on the case next week, as part of a review granted earlier this year by an appeal court judge, following defence claims that evidence had been poorly handled and collated.

But Professor Carla Vecchiotti and her colleague Stefano Conti wanted additional time to examine other documents which were drawn up by the original investigators as part of their fresh probe, and this was agreed.

In March leaked details of their initial findings appeared to give fresh hope to Knox - jailed for the murder of student Meredith Kercher in Italy - after the new experts said the evidence was "insufficient to convict her".

Knox, 23, is serving 26 years for the brutal sex killing of Miss Kercher, 21, who was found with her throat in her bedroom in the house they shared. Key to her conviction was a 30cm kitchen knife which contained her DNA on the handle and genetic material - but not blood - from Miss Kercher was found on the blade.

Earlier this year an appeal court judge in Perugia, where the murder took place, authorised an independent review by the two forensic experts from La Sapienza University in Rome. They were also asked to re-examine a bloodied bra clasp belonging to Miss Kercher on which DNA from Knox's co-accused Raffaele Sollecito, 25, was also found - but after it had been "lost" for six weeks.

Computer studies graduate Sollecito, 25, was given 25 years jail and both he and Knox deny any involvement in the murder and are appealing against their conviction.

In the leaked initial findings both said the knife, which was found in Sollecito's kitchen, revealed that the DNA material on it was so slight that it was insufficient to conclusively convict Knox. The amount of DNA was so small that the two professors also concluded it was not enough to carry out a second test on the knife.

While the bra clasp was described as "so deteriorated" that it was impossible to re-examine it for any traces of DNA - it was originally found at the scene but then lost for six weeks before being discovered elsewhere in Miss Kercher's bedroom.

According to the report the clasp - which had been cut from the bra - had been poorly kept in a "liquid jar" and not properly dried which meant that it had "rotted and rusted".

Knox's lawyer Carlo Dalla Vedova said: "We expected them to ask for more time - it's a prerogative of theirs and these experts always do because they want to be sure of their findings.

"The leaked details from earlier this year simply confirmed what we already knew and what we have already said in court - the evidence was insufficient.

"We heard how the clasp had rusted away because it had been kept in a bag of water and the DNA on the knife was too low. We know have to wait for the final report."

The next hearing is due to take place on May 21 when the court will hear from the murder squad chief, Monica Napoleoni, before adjourning until the end of June - meaning a verdict may not come until the autumn.

Miss Kercher, of Coulsdon, Surrey, was in Italy as part of her European Studies degree at Leeds University and had only been in Perugia for two months when she was murdered in November 2007.

The military operation took mere minutes.

U.S. helicopters ferrying elite counter-terrorism troops into the compound identified by the CIA as bin Laden's hideout -- and back out again in less than 40 minutes. Bin Laden was shot in the head, officials said, after he and his bodyguards resisted the assault.Three adult males were also killed in the raid, including one of bin Laden's sons, whom officials did not name. One of bin Laden's sons, Hamza, is a senior member of al Qaeda. U.S. officials also said one woman was killed when she was used as a shield by a male combatant, and two other women were injured.

Mr. Obama chaired no fewer than five National Security Council meetings meeting on the pursuit of bin Laden, CBS News has learned, and gave the order to plan an attack on his suspected compound on the morning of April 29. He gave final order for the attack Sunday morning.

U.S. officials said the helicopter raid in Pakistan was carried out by CIA paramilitaries together with the elite Navy SEAL Team Six.

The greatest terrorist threat to the U.S. is now considered to be the al Qaeda franchise in Yemen, far from al Qaeda's core in Pakistan. The Yemen branch almost took down a U.S.-bound airliner on Christmas 2009 and nearly detonated explosives aboard two U.S. cargo planes last fall. Those operations were carried out without any direct involvement from bin Laden.

One U.S. official said inside information was key to the successful operation. Detainees and cooperation from foreign authorities were crucial in providing information that led to his capture.

Based on statements given by U.S. detainees since the 9/11 attacks, officials said, intelligence officials have long known that bin Laden trusted one al Qaeda courier in particular, and they believed he might be living with him in hiding.

President Barack Obama met Friday afternoon with members of the military team responsible for conducting the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound, and promised a war-weary nation victory over al Qaeda.

"We are ultimately going to defeat al Qaeda," the president told more than 2,300 troops who recently returned from Afghanistan. "We have cut off their head."

"Our strategy is working and there is no greater evidence of that than justice finally being delivered to Osama bin Laden," he declared. "We're still the America that does the hard things, that does the great things."

The president made his remarks at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, home to the Army's 101st Airborne Division and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, the group that operated the helicopters used in the raid.

Bin Laden death leaves roots of terror untouched

While at Fort Campbell, the president, along with Vice President Joe Biden, privately met with members of Navy SEAL Team 6, the unit that conducted the raid.

Among the SEALs that Obama met was the one who fired the fatal shots at bin Laden, but that person was not singled out to the president, a senior administration official told CNN.

The president met a canine that was also part of the operation, according to the official.

Obama visits ground zero; honors victims of 9/11

Obama and Biden thanked the commandos and were briefed on the operation by the unit members who conducted it, according to a White House official.

Obama awarded Presidential Unit Citations to the units involved in the Pakistan mission, the official said. The citation is the highest such honor that can be given to a military unit.

"They practiced tirelessly for this mission, and when I gave the order they were ready," the president told the troops. "They're America's quiet professionals."

It was a "job well done," he said.

Trove of data found at bin Laden home

Friday's visit to Fort Campbell came a day after Obama's first presidential visit to New York's ground zero, the focal point of bin Laden's 9/11 terror attacks.

It also came one day after a nationwide alert was issued regarding rail security, the first terror threat notification linked to materials found during the raid on the Abbottabad compound in Pakistan. The terror plot was planned for the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

As early as February 2010, al Qaeda members discussed a plan to derail trains in the United States by placing obstructions on tracks over bridges and valleys, the alert said, according to one law enforcement official.No specific rail system was identified in the plans for the attacks, the official said.

With bin Laden's death, there has been a growing call among some lawmakers to immediately withdraw the 130,000 U.S. and allied troops still battling the late al Qaeda leader's followers and his Taliban allies.

Obama has repeatedly said he is confident the United States can meet a self-imposed deadline to begin bringing troops back home in July without compromising Afghan security, though military commanders and government officials have raised concern about the readiness of Afghan security forces.

During a Senate Foreign Relations committee hearing Thursday, legislators on both sides of the aisle said a new approach to Pakistan is now needed.

Pakistan's government is "very irrational," said Sen. Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican.

But Pakistani Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir said it is a "false charge" to assert that Pakistani authorities did not go after bin Laden. He said his country's intelligence agency alerted the United States about the presence of al Qaeda operatives in Abbottabad as early as 2004.

Pakistani armed forces chiefs issued a statement Thursday admitting that there had been "shortcomings in developing intelligence" on the terror leader's presence in the country.

The army chief of staff, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, also "made it very clear that any similar action, violating the sovereignty of Pakistan, will warrant a review on the level of military/intelligence cooperation with the United States," the statement said.

Pakistan has ordered U.S. military personnel on its territory drawn down to the "minimum essential" level in the wake of the raid, the statement said.

President Obama's willingness to let states design their own health care systems while meeting key federal goals as early as 2014 represents a challenge to Republican governors and lawmakers opposed to the federal law.
Obama's endorsement of legislation Monday that would give states such freedom three years earlier than the 2010 law allows was panned by Republicans more interested in repealing the entire law or getting the U.S. Supreme Court to declare it unconstitutional.

On the other hand, the president's move was applauded by lawmakers in Vermont who want to go even further than the federal law, which is designed to cover 32 million more Americans with health insurance. The law will expand Medicaid and create a system of health exchanges, or marketplaces, in which insurers compete for customers.
"The president's embracing this proposal is good 'put up or shut up' politics," says Robert Laszewski, a private health care consultant. "He is challenging all of these Republican governors who have control of both houses of their legislatures to put a better idea on the table and show the country why it's better."

The law is being phased in, with the major provisions starting by 2014. States could not opt out entirely. Key requirements would remain, such as those prohibiting insurers from canceling coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

States can ask Washington for a waiver from other provisions, such as the law's mandate that all individuals get insurance — but they would have to cover as many people, provide the same level of benefits and not raise the federal deficit.
"A state may not like the way the (federal law) is providing that coverage and could argue that other ways would be more appropriate, but they still have to come up with a way to do those three things," says Laura Tobler of the National Conference of State Legislatures.

In his address to the governors, Obama quipped that many are not in the health law's "fan club." But he urged them to work together to put it into practice and offered faster state flexibility as an olive branch. Obama also has agreed to two other, less sweeping changes, including one that would ease tax reporting rules for small business.

Arab youth want democracy, not theocracy

Hosni Mubarak's resignation resurrected a tsunami wave of articles and commentaries on whether Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood would now come to power. And yet, few have asked why the primary leaders of grassroots revolt in Egypt and across the Arab world curiously have not been Islamic organizations.

Authoritarian rulers in the Arab world, like Egypt's Hosni Mubarak, Tunisia's Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, have long justified their repressive governments by warning the United States and Europe that the alternative to their governments was "chaos" and an Islamist takeover.

The new generation of Arab youth and their supporters, however diverse and different, is united in its desire to topple entrenched autocrats and corrupt governments.

Having witnessed the failures of Islamist authoritarian regimes in Sudan, Iran, the Taliban's Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia, and the terror of the Bin Laden's of the world, they are not interested in theocracy but democracy with its greater equality, pluralism, freedoms and opportunities.

But what about the Islamists, where are they?

The Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamic groups neither initiated nor have led pro-democracy protest movements. The uprisings have revealed a broad-based pro-democracy movement that is not driven by a single ideology or by religious extremists.
What has occurred is not an attempt at an Islamist takeover but a broad-based call for reforms.

People from every walk of life were united in a common cause: professionals and laborers, young and old, women and men, Muslim and Christian, the poor, middle and upper classes.

As their signs, placards, statements, demands and the waving of flags not Islamist placards indicated, protesters want to reclaim their dignity, control of their lives and the right to determine their government; they demand government accountability and transparency, rule of law, an end to widespread corruption, and respect for human rights.
This common platform has been evolving over the past decade in several Arab countries and has been endorsed by major political actors, including Islamists.

In Tunisia, Syria and Libya, mainstream Islamists responding to the political realities of their societies have become part of the broader landscape. They reject an extremist vision of imposing an Islamic state and have embraced a democratic electoral process and political pluralism, often forming alliances and working with other sectors in society.

Since the late 20th century Islamist parties have been an integral part of the social and political fabric of their respective societies.

Islamically-oriented candidates and political parties in Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Indonesia have opted for reform through ballots, not bullets.

They have successfully contested and won municipal and parliamentary seats, held cabinet positions, and served in senior positions, such as prime minister of Turkey, Malaysia and Iraq, and president of Indonesia.

But what about the danger of an Islamist takeover?

In contrast to radical extremists who want to seize power and impose their brand of an Islamic state, mainstream Islamic groups have competed and done well in elections and remained non-violent despite government limitations, harassment, repression, and rigged elections.

They have created effective NGOs that respond to the social and educational needs of their societies. They have come to appreciate diversity and pluralism in society and the need for democracy as the best system to manage this diversity.

They have also been advocating many of the values of democracy, such as citizenship, rule of law, constitutionalism, separation of power, good governance and accountability.

Mainstream Islamists have a good grasp of the intricate socio-economic and political problems facing their societies and know quite well that these problems can only be resolved through cooperation and by sharing power and responsibility with other political forces, and not through monopolizing power.

Islamic movements, like all other groups and parties in their countries, have a right to participate in elections and be represented in government and will continue to have an influential role.

In past elections, Islamic groups and parties, absent other viable political choices, were the only alternative game in town. They garnered the votes not only of their members and supporters but also of those who wanted to express their opposition to, or disfavor with, the government.

However, in a new, more open and pluralistic political climate, they will be but one of many potential political players and parties.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers criticized the Obama administration‘s response to the political crisis in Egypt during a congressional hearing on Wednesday.

Rep. Gary L. Ackerman, New York Democrat, accused the administration of “snatching failure from the jaws of success.”

“The Obama administration now appears to be wavering on whether America really backs the demands of the Egyptian people, or just wants a return to stability with a facade of change,” Mr. Ackerman said.

In a teleconference with reporters on Wednesday, senior Obama administration officials defended their response, saying it is not for the U.S. to “dictate outcomes” in Egypt.

“The future going forward is going to be determined by the Egyptian people,” said Ben Rhodes,“We don’t see this as a situation where we dictate outcomes, but we do stand for a set of principles and we stand for a process that can make this, as the president said, a moment of opportunity in Egypt and not just a moment of turmoil,” he said.

Hundreds of thousands of anti-government protests have amassed in Cairo's Tahrir Square and in cities around the country since Jan. 25 demanding the end of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak‘s 30-year rule. deputy national security adviser for strategic communications.Jake Sullivan, deputy chief of staff for Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and director of policy planning, said the administration has been reiterating its message in private conversations with Egyptian leaders and its other allies that there needs to be “no violence and an end to the harassment and detention, and for the need for political change in Egypt.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he hasn't sold out his conservative principles since taking office nearly five years ago — despite spending billions on government initiatives and putting the federal treasury deep into deficit.

Harper made the comment in an interview with CBC News broadcast Monday night. Harper answered questions on topics ranging from the merits of a coalition government to how his own patience and level of partisanship has changed since his party came to power on Jan. 23, 2006.

It was in defending himself against the suggestion that he has abandoned his conservative roots that Harper was most vociferous.

"I think if you look on balance I think this is a centre-right government," Harper told CBC News anchor Peter Mansbridge.

"I don't think the fundamentals of our values are very different. I think we're clear about those things. We tend to favour free enterprise and markets over government intervention. Low taxes over high taxes. We favour family tradition. We're strong supporters of our traditional allies."

Harper said it's easy to identify the values for which his government stands, but added that it has been necessary to adapt to the dire economic climate caused by the global recession.

"I mean, fundamentally, being a conservative is about being a political realist. And one's policies have to be appropriate."

Harper said it's "no secret" that the government launched massive economic stimulus measures to create jobs and boost the economy.

That has led to an unprecedented $56 billion deficit in the past year. In the 2008 election, Harper said he didn't plan to run a deficit.

"Everything I know about the economy tells me that's the appropriate policy under the extremely unusual circumstances we found ourselves in," said Harper.

"You don't stand up and do a policy that's inappropriate because somebody says it's not their dictionary definition of conservatism. But I think we've done it in a way that is consistent with our views and consistent with the promotion of the kind of Canada we want to see over time."

Among the other highlights of the interview:

- On the minority Parliament, he said his government has demonstrated that "it can work" although "it hasn't always been pretty."

"We don't get done everything we want to get done, or sometimes I think we need to get done. But I think for the most part, considering what could have happened, it's served Canadians fairly well."

- On the next election, he once again predicted one of two outcomes: a Conservative majority, or a "coalition of the other parties" if the Tories are only re-elected with a minority.

"That's my belief. Everything I see points to that. I, of course, will always be happy to see if the people of Canada elect a Conservative minority, I'd be happy to do that. But my anticipation is that we'll go one way or the other next time."

- On government corruption, he said the Tories have turned the page from previous Liberal governments dogged by scandals.

"I'm not going to say we've run a perfect government by any means, but there have been no corruption scandals or anything resembling that under this government."

- On his leadership style, he fended off criticism that he is overly controlling.

"Every prime minister (that) has been in charge, all across the spectrum — Mr. Trudeau, Mr. Mulroney, Mr. Chretien — every prime minister is accused of being a one-man band because the reality is the prime minister is the chief executive office of our government."

- On governing, he said the longer a leader is in power, "the more you tend to see the partisan and electoral game as a distraction."

Chinese President Hu Jintao arrives in Washington on Tuesday, a day before a high-profile meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama to discuss trade, currency and a host of other issues, including North Korea.

Chinese state media has reported that Hu will stress how a constructive, comprehensive partnership between the powers could be mutually beneficial and help ensure stability in Asia and worldwide despite differences between Beijing and Washington.

In addition to Obama, Hu is also scheduled to meet with top legislators and business executives. After Washington, Hu will make a stop in Chicago.

Wednesday's meeting between the leaders of the world's two largest economies has put the spotlight on criticism that the government-controlled People's Bank of China artificially undervalues the yuan, bringing down the cost of Chinese exports, which would give it an advantage in the international market.

Last week, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said China must do more to address its undervalued currency and dependence on exports, adding that such a move is in Beijing's best interest because it will control inflation.

A bill introduced Monday by Sen. Charles Schumer and two other Democrats would impose penalties, including possible tariffs, on nations that manipulate their currencies.

Zhang Yesui, China's ambassador to the United States, hyped the visit as vital to relations between the Communist state and a democratic power, according to a Xinhua report published Saturday.

He said that it was important to continue bilateral ties and address issues through dialogue, while adding that disagreements were inevitable given political, cultural and economic differences. Ultimately, Zhang said, the nations can and should create a "win-win situation" through positive diplomacy.

This hopeful rhetoric, though, comes as officials in Washington have recently suggested that Beijing has been slow to act in some respects, and generally should consider altering its approach to reflect its increasing influence.

In a speech at the State Department Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that China must assume the responsibility of being a world power, rather than basing policies on its own self-interest.

Clinton acknowledged that relations between Beijing and Washington were at a "critical juncture," noting persisting tensions on economic and security issues and accusing China of discriminatory practices that put American firms at a disadvantage.

Still, insisting that the United States doesn't view China as a threat, she said, "our economies are intertwined and so are our futures."

"A thriving America is good for China, and a thriving China is good for America," said the top U.S. diplomat.

One hot-button issue that Beijing addressed on Sunday was the Korean peninsula, days after Clinton urged China to use its "unique ties" with North Korea to tamp down tensions there.

Urging an early resumption of long-stalled six-party talks committed to reining in North Korea's nuclear program, Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue told Xinhua that "the peninsula's denuclearization and the normalization of relations" was in all parties' interest.

"China will continue to work with all the parties concerned and the international community to ensure peace, stability and prosperity," he said.

President Barack Obama says accomplishments in the final days of the U.S. congressional session, and cooperation with opposition Republicans, raise hopes of getting more done for Americans in the new year.

Just after the November mid-term congressional elections, President Obama spoke about what he called the "shellacking" his Democratic party suffered at the hands of Republicans, who won control of the House of Representatives with a gain of 63 seats.

Obama has since made what many political analysts say has been a remarkable political comeback, one the White House hopes will help him during the next phase of his presidency on the way to the 2012 presidential election.

The president's compromise with Republicans on extending lower tax rates, including those for wealthy Americans, subjected him to the wrath of far left Democrats. But he emerged in many respects looking stronger and more independent.

On Wednesday, Obama pointed to two other victories -- repeal of the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy on gays and lesbians serving in the U.S. military, and the 71 to 26 U.S. Senate vote ratifying the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia.

He said these and other accomplishments in the "lame duck" session of Congress are proof that leaders in Washington are not "doomed to endless gridlock" "This has been a season of progress for the American people. That progress is a reflection of the message that voters sent in November, a message that said it is time to find common ground on challenges facing our country. That's a message that I will take to heart in the new year and I hope my Democratic and Republican friends will do the same," he said.

The president called U.S. Senate ratification of the New START treaty a "powerful signal" to the world that Republicans and Democrats stand together when it comes to U.S. security. He said it will enhance cooperation with Moscow on issues such as sanctions against Iran and preventing terrorists from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Obama voiced deep disappointment with lawmaker's failure to approve the DREAM Act, which would have provided a path to citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants. He indicated he will continue to push for its approval in a new Congress.

The president predicted "tough fights" ahead as part of what he called a coming robust debate about cutting government spending and inefficient programs, while maintaining investments needed for economic recovery and long-term growth.

Looking ahead to next year when he will face a Republican-controlled House of Representatives and a reduced majority in the Senate, the president said he hopes Democrats and Republicans can find enough common ground to help Americans.

"We don't have to agree 100 percent to get things done that enhance the lives of families all across America. If we can sustain that spirit then regardless of how the politics play out in 2012, the American people will be better for it, and that is my ultimate goal," he said.

Saying the U.S. economy is past the crisis point, Obama said again that his main focus in the next two years will be to bring down unemployment and ensuring the U.S. can be competitive.

Saying he shares the frustration of many Democrats over his tax deal with Republicans, the president said in the "long-run" the U.S. cannot afford "a series of tax breaks" for wealthier Americans, adding this would be part of a debate beginning when the new Congress convenes.

After Wednesday's news conference, and as Congress concluded its work, President Obama left Washington for Hawaii where his wife Michelle and daughters, Sasha and Malia have already begun their holiday vacation.

Obama is expected to spend time going over drafts of the State of the Union Address he will deliver to a joint session of the U.S. Congress in the new year.

The importance of that speech has been elevated given the challenges the president faces with the U.S. economy, pursuing goals such as comprehensive immigration reform, and preparing Americans for the tough decisions he says will be needed to address the $1.3 trillion dollar federal government deficit, and nearly $14 trillion national debt.

AC Milan are the worldly wise travellers of Italian football. They have won more international competitions than domestic championships, and no team in the world has more than their 18 global trophies.

Even Milan's roots are foreign. They were founded in 1899 by Alfred Edwards and Herbert Kilpin, two English expatriates, and the spelling of the club as Milan rather than Milano is a nod to the club's history.
Two years after their formation, Milan were champions of Italy. They won further titles in 1906 and 1907, but a dispute over the signing of foreign players in 1908 led to the founding of their great rivals, Internazionale.

Milan had to wait over 40 years for their next title, which came in 1951. Their side included the famous triumvirate of Swedes: Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl and Nils Liedholm, whose surnames prompted the cute sobriquet 'Gre-No-Li'. Nordahl's 221 goals are still a club record.

After three more championships in the Fifties, Milan set their sights wider. In 1963 they became the first Italian side to win the Euroepan Cup, beating the holders Benfica 2-1 in the final thanks to two goals from the great Jose Altafini. They also won another European Cup in 1994, smashing Barcelona 4-0 in the final. Capello added another Serie A in 1996, but with him went Milan's golden age.
